I love reading about food maybe more than actually eating or cooking it. I love to see food related shows where a person travels a place, tastes foods specific to that region.. I loved seeing especially spice bazar that aired on TLC maybe reruns still take place..it was on this program me that I got introduced to pita breads, tagine, couscous and of course hummus..
I searched for the recipes of hummus but of course I didn't have access to tahina( sesame seed paste) and hummus without tahina is like the hint of chat masala in raita.. It would taste good others is but not same.. And then I came to US.
Here I got access to many such foods which were still not that easily accessible in India like couscous (tasty but more like dalia) , Parmesan cheese ( became my all time favorite) quinoa (ok ok) guacamole and avocado (creamy delight) and salsa, picante sauce ( plain mast) and of course hummus.
I tasted once hummus at Olive Garden, an Italian restaurant , it tasted divine..
I used to pass fresh produce section so many times and each time see containers of salads, dressings, salsas , guacamole and of course hummus.. And one fine day I gave in to my temptation and took a container which was dollar wise cooler on pocket and smaller, which if not liked can be finished off soon.
But I didn't regret.. I slathered hummus on bread and toasted it.. For someone who loves cheese.. Hummus seemed to be a tasty , creamy alternative to cheese... Then I seemed to dip and eat hummus with salted crackers, raw vegetables or just swirl of finger.. Needless to say.. That container got over too soon and gave me a chance to buy another one...
For ones who don't know, hummus is a dip or sauce made of boiled and peeled chickpeas or kabuli chana, with addition of cumin powder, lime juice and tahina..
I seem to be motivated to make it from scratch, just like I tried pizza( awesome)... Let's see.. Maybe I will
