I work in a lovely IT company full of “educated” people. Educated as in having a bachelor in engg. or masters in computer application. Where people like me…French translators actually get lost. Civic sense …I always believed came with education or did it? Or did it come with a sense of responsibility to the things around us or with more reading? I have seen in my office…water taps running and ladies makeuping. Not having a courtesy to closing the taps and saving the priceless water. Or lights in rest rooms on even if no one using them…gals and guys leave them on. Do we do the same thing at home? I wonder. The tissues taken in handful and wasted for wiping a pair of hands? Isn’t one tissue more than enough? Or are our hands that huge? That handful of tissues is not enough? Or maybe if we carry our own handkerchiefs? Will we learn only by lack of it? Will we learn only when we are told to pay for it? If a thing free really holds no value and only when it is taxed does it increase in worth? I remember we had free bus service once upon a time. Later we started to pay for it. At such time there was such a hue and cry in the people as they have to pay for the bus etc etc. but if company would have made them pay right from the start, the amount deducted from source then maybe they wouldn’t have a problem.
I have known scarcity of water by staying in such a place where water cut is a daily affair in summers. I have known the importance of drinking water when walked in scorching sun without water. But do we need to know every thing just by experience? Can’t we just learn? It is only because we are privileged to have water in the taps that we forget the people who have to walk for miles to get some. It is because that on switching on the button that the fan works the AC is on that we forget people in dim light of the lamp and no air around. It is this that is disturbing abundance of free nature make people careless. What I just do is pray …and hope that at some point these so called educated people are enlightened with some common sense which is not very common and just work a bit from their end to make earth a better place to live.
